This page is a collation of different reports on plants that are not sensitive to Juglone the alleopathic chemical that walnuts exude. I have found inconsitencies in these reports. (Your milage may vary).
Plants I plan to try include;
Pears, Hazelnut, Witch hazel, Mulberry, Russian Olive, Currant, Goji Berry, Black raspberry, Gooseberry, Sunflower, Corn, Squash, Beans, Daylily, Mint, White clover, daffodil, Carrots, parsnips, Allium,
Sources for the claims these plants are tolerant;
hardy kiwi, redbud, pawpaw and hackberry, hemlock, ash, ohio buckeye, musclewood, chinkapin oak and sweetgum all thriving under a two thirds mature black walnut. there are pear trees on the other side of the yard along with hazelnut, black raspberry, gooseberry, willow, all doing well.https://midwestpermaculture.ning.com/group/plantguilds
The plant guild include elderberry, daylily (petals edible), dusty miller, and also a rosa rugosa from raintree nursery bred for large hips, which I thought had died, but all evidence now shows that the two plants may be making a comeback! Hazelnut, gooseberry and mint all doing well. https://midwestpermaculture.ning.com/group/plantguilds
The good news is that some plants are not bothered at all by Juglone-laced Soil. Black Raspberries are immune. So are Melons, Beets, Squash, Beans, Allium, Carrots and Corn. http://www.helium.com/items/1318494-black-walnut-juglones-allelopath
I also know of one case of two very healthy and productive pears within 20 feet of the base of a very productive and grass massacre-ing Walnut, https://midwestpermaculture.ning.com/group/plantguilds/forum/topics/blackwalnut-plant-guilds?xg_source=activity
I saw one plant guild out of Gia's Garden, which included Wolfberry or Goji Berry, Hackberry, Mulberry, Currant, some Nightshade and a Russian Olive.
